The metal processing sector is one of the largest export sectors in the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina and in the Zenica-Doboj Canton. In the BH economy, the metal processing sector accounts for 25 % of total production and accounts for more than 1/3 of total exports.

In 2019, Zenica-Doboj Canton realized exports worth 1.79 billion. KM and is the leading canton in the total export of Federation Bosnia and Herzegovina, noting that the largest exporters in both Federation Bosnia and Herzegovina and Zenica-Doboj Canton are companies from the metal processing sector, namely: ArcelorMittal Zenica d.o.o. Zenica, FAD d.d. company for the production of auto parts, Tešanj, indicates that the Zenica-Doboj Canton has significant capacities in the field of the metal processing industry.

That this is a strategically important branch for the development of the Canton is indicated by the fact that the development strategies of Zenica-Doboj Canton and the Development Strategy of the City of Zenica define strategic goals with a focus on the development and encouragement of the metal processing sector.

The metal processing sector is dominated by a large number of medium and small enterprises, but also several large companies, with the possibility for large companies to integrate existing primary producers for the production of products with higher added value, high quality, and competitive prices. The main export markets for companies in this sector are EU countries (Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria).

Further growth of the metal sector and improvement of the competitiveness of companies in this sector should ensure new investments, whether they are direct investments, long-term investment loans, or other appropriate sources of financing.
